  That is what is called the free market enterprise. When prices of petroleum products and utilities goes up, it affects everything else. When the exchange rate goes up, it affects the prices of everything. We forget everything on the market is intertwined. These fools in power do not consider all these facts when making policy decisions, they just sit down and decide we are going to increase import duties forgetting doing that will affect other parts of the economy or should I say "ecomini".

  When VAT, manufacturing cost eg Power, Water, fuel increase the cost of production will increase. In addition with cedi devaluation, cost of imported materials for manufacturing will also increase. The impact of VAT increase on manufacturing cost is mainly an interest issue as funds are usually borrowed to clear goods from the ports and also a cashflow issue as the additional VAT paid as output tax could have been used for something other investment. Based on the above how can consumer prices stay the same or decrease? The impact is obvious.

  Free trade indeed. Do you know what your talking about? Free trade does not mean arbitrary increase in prices. What calculations or costing do the traders do before arriving at their final prices. This issue of uncontrolled prices goes beyond your thinking. The cedi does not depreciate by one cedi but in pesewas that you don't respect so go back to use the pesewa in trading and these excuses for arbitrary increases in prices of goods would stop if we want to be honest with ourselves. Importers are pricing their goods at forward prices and you call that a free trade. this horrible and not terrible.
