  Ghana is a net importer of almost everything, starting to block import is not the solution, because what will happen if other countries start to block Ghana's export ?

  Ghana is a net importer of almost everything, starting to block import is not the solution, because what will happen if other countries start to block Ghana's export ?
  We can easely produce Rice ourselves, we have the land and the right climate, and an advantage of 50% in price for local production (20% duty, 17.5% VAT, 2.5% NHIL and 10% Transport to bring it to Ghana) that alone should make local production very competative ! Import stops are always hitting the poor, and making their food to expensive !

  A 70% shortfall in local production is a clear obstacle to the goal of reducing rice imports.

  A 70% shortfall in local production is a clear obstacle to the goal of reducing rice imports.
  
  Until we have enough farmers producing, and enough a of good quality supply, we'll just keep saying the same thing over and over again... 10 years ago this same situation was true - what has this gov't really done to change that... just the usual lip service.
  
  First, invest heavily in production (irrigation, tractors, rice mills, bagging and storage, reinvogorate produce buying company - similar to COCOBOD but for rice).
  
  After all that: THEN begin process of reducing import consumption. Increase tax and levies on importing rice/food products.
  
  Finally, don't do foolish things like ban land border imports. To me that sounds like someone helping out their Chinese partners in crime over ECOWAS states. Any import reduction must cover all sources, starting with the largest (ports and air), not the other way (land borders??)

  We must learn to eat maize products too. It will surprise you to count the number of food items maize could be used to produce. Always talking about rice as if that is the most heavenly food we need in Ghana
