  This is a very intelligent observation but will our leaders listen? I have always said that we don't think outside the box. We are so used to the orthodox and traditional way of doing things that we sometimes fail to realize other opportunities that may be at our disposal.

  Intelligent???? you obviously believe in theatrics over realism...do you know how much it cost to implement and run a coal plant???? where is the coal coming from??? I assume you are not confusing coal with charcoal....

  Firstly, more so than gas and even oil, coal is very bad for the environment. Even this week, a friendly soccer match in China is about to be cancelled/moved because of smog. In Ghana where we are already lax about the environment, adding coal to the mix is only going to make the destruction of our environment worse.
  
  Coal, unlike oil and gas, is something that we do not produce in Ghana in any significant quantity. Does coal have useful applications - yes... is it so useful that we NEED (i repeat - NEED) it for our housing/steel/ in Ghana... nope.
  
  Most countries that rely on coal for energy productions are either... 1. Coal producers.. 2. Rich enough to warrant the importation of another source of raw materials. In Ghana, we sadly fall outside either of those options, so why, why why why, do we insist on adding coal when we have our own oil... when we have our own gas. It makes so little sense it's actually infuriating.
  
  Finally, talk about Ghana's dependance on Nigerian gas... are we that shortsighted/blind/confused that we forget that we actually plan to send Ghana's gas through the WAGP to other countries. Our dependance on the failure which has been WAGP, and our continued development towards proper oil and gas production should make Nigeria irrelevant.
  
  Coal to me (my personal opinion), is just the wrong sort of idea for Ghana. Anyone looking toward this as a solution for Ghana is either trying to push their own agenda - importer, etc - or someone who has confused the reality of China/South Africa/Germany, for the reality of the Ghana situation - we have much better options and prospects in oil and gas, not to mention how much we will save as far as foreign exchange goes by using raw materials sourced in GHANA

  I totally agree with the last contributor. Ghana for economic reasons must as much as possible utilise resources that can be easily accessed locally to generate energy. To suggest coal, of all energy generating resources, as a panacea for our 'dumsor' woe defies every economic logic, please. Apart from economic it doesn't make sense environmental wise.
