Containers are first scanned. This is then followed by at least 4 inspections by various customs and security agencies. The scanned data should be enough information for all. Customs could do only one random inspection to determine the scanned data. Final inspection should be by security at Exit. This system would eliminate the tremendous confusion, multiplicity of personnel and agencies and the unnecessary stress and cruelty that happen at Tema daily. I estimate that over 70% of so called work at the imports section of the Port is useless work. Can be eliminated to save collected revenue.

Its about time a proper task force is set up at the ports to curb this stealing of state funds. I confess to my crimes and regret to say that I am a graphic designer and as far back as 1999, I was making a lot of money making fake "Bill of Laden" for clearing agents. What we normally do is redesign the original invoice to generate a new(fake ) Bill of Laden reducing all the values. I may not be the only one who did but I know I did that for a lot of people. It is still a practice which goes on even today.

One thing that can be done to check these mulpractice is the introduction of a WAN (Wide Area Network System) whereby any revenue received in Tema can also be monitored in Accra, Kumasi etc. Which means alldocuments presented will be circulated on this network so if one is taking bribe, he or she knows its being monitored by someone else on another computer on the same network. All customs values and duties must also be cross networked for synchronization. at least its a first step.

The government should collect all duties from the country where goods are coming from before the goods arrive. For example if the goods are coming from USA, the duties must be paid in dollars into governments account in US so by the time the goods arrived there is no duty to pay. Also it will help the government to have foreign currency in foreign countries.

What does Government expect when they charge outrageous import taxes, they reduce taxes at the ports as well other charges and trust me importers will no cause in indulge in beating the system

We buy stuff here for pennies only to be charged at 100% the cost price?
hard working people save and send a car home and get hit with crazy duties that if they can afford they loose their item only to see these officials driving them for free.
