Yes Ghana is one of the few African countries that has being thinking outside the box. We have a running plant now using sea water to provide portable water for the people of Nungua. A project is underway at Ada to use the tides of the sea (tidal waves) to generate power.

Though Mr Anokye's suggestion sounds good it cannot be a solution under the current generation circumstances of the country as you will require about the same electric energy you expect to generate to pump that water.

Most countries that pump the water back has nuclear plants that meets their off-peak demand in excess. Hence during off-peak, they use the excess to pump the water downstream their hydro dams back into the dam.

The politicians normally think their wise than the engineers and will continue to tell lies while blaming the Engineers. Kofi Anokye, please do understand that there is nothing new to discuss apart from MONEY. IF the government should release funds i tell you wonders will be performed in a short time. Wee are suffering because the government OWE VRA and for that matter no money to purchase materials for production. Let the government pay VRA just what it owe ; i tell you that allow can bring life. I have thought about this idea for a long time but because my educational background is not science or engineering bias, I felt it probably was not feasible that is why our engineers at VRA have not given it a thought . I see some reason in what mr Anokye is proposing as well as the challenges Mr Dk feared. We need to calculate the volume of water that is being discharged from the reservoir by way of energy generation and peg it against the energy that would be required to power these pumps that would recycle the water back to The reservoir.
The challenge as stated by Mr DK though would be the total head for the water to be delivered which will draw a lot of power.
I however do not see the need to use sea water as it could add to the cost because of the distance for pipe laying and again the energy required to pump the water all the way up. We should therefore consider drawing water after the Kpong dam . That way, we ensure that both Kpong and Akosombo are operational.

The ENERGY that will be required to pump water from the sea into the dam will be more than the energy that the generators will produce from that pumped water. The net result is that you will use more energy to get out less energy. This is why this has never been done anywhere in the world. The idea is scientifically flawed. There are other aspects to consider if this idea were to be workable; I am only looking at the energy aspect here

It's advisable for us to start harvesting the rain. When harvested it can be used to top up the dams when there is a shortage.
Waters from nearby areas should be harvested and not allowed to waste.

It is said sea never dries so the best form of electricity generation would have been sea and sea is all over the place but the Americans and the Chinese haven't thought of using the sea as the alternative source to power generation. The reason is that the high content of salt in the water would not permit an easy generation. Whereas it is possible, it is the most expensive venture and no bank will finance it. Those going around with sea power generation projects are fraudsters whose intention is to attract unsuspecting investors to dupe them

why not pump the effluent from Akosombo or Kpone back into the dam waterhead to raise its level? This is reportedly being done in Burkina Faso.

Reasonably, when the water level is low the total amount of electricity produced will also be lower.However, to pomp such amount of sea water from the sea for such a distance to Akosombo requires huge electrical energy. Thus,before such a plan is considered,we must first ask ourselves where this extra electricity must come from.
