What has become of our divestiture program? Has it ended? Are there any more of State Assets that need to be offloaded to the Private Sector? How could the Government help native entrepreneurs take full ownership of such Businesses in a way that they would not suffer the same transient existence in the private domain as previous ones that were divested?
The fact still remains that hardly any single Ghanaian could wholly acquire any of this State Businesses with his or her own financial resources. This is where the Government could come in to encourage, say, crowd-sourcing among Ghanaians, or offer a temporary guarantee for new local entrepreneurs to access Capital to buy and operate these Businesses.
Well-planned local private take-overs, not the usual crony-capitalist transfers, could ensure wider employment opportunities for our unemployed, with a modest but realistic rate of projected growth under some conditions of tax-breaks to the fledgling all-Ghanaian private firms.
What I wish to see is Ghanaians boldly coming together from across various divides, partisan and tribal, to build solid Business entities that would take charge of most of our big Economic ventures.
If we do not want the Government or State to run our Businesses, we must step up to the plate, even in the face of Government frustrations, to demand the opportunity to own and run those Businesses. Our local Banks must duly step to the plate to offer various forms of financial assistance to help Ghanaians own these Companies.
