  If the price of imported cement is competitive against that of local one why not allow the people to bring it in and sell at rates affordable to the public?? That is what competitiveness means and not monopoly Mr. Dawson-Amoah.

  Improve efficiency to be competitive. Government can make more money by increasing tariffs. I wonder what is there to investigate. The story is incomplete.Do we already have high tariffs yet the imported ones are cheaper?

  The Cement Manufacturing companies in Ghana have enjoyed monopolistic status for far too long. Unfortunately they have used this position to always blackmail consumers and arbitrary increase prices. The worse and annoying part is to deliberately create shortage as and when it pleases them. I don't think this requires government intervention. If competition will allow us have regular supply of cement at a lower price, we happy. The government should not waste its energy on this complaint. The cement producing company should be innovative to remain competitive.We are fed up with GHACEM.

  Rather investigate why Cement prices are too high even before the dumsor started.Monoolies should not abuse the position in the Ghanaian market.Affordable cement prices is a plus to the construction industry by creating more jobs and reducing prices of houses and building projects in the country.Rather benchmark Ghanaian Cement prices with others in the ECOWAS and Africa as a whole , it is too high.

  The cement industry needs competition from within and from outside the country.That will enable price of a bag of cement to be determined by market forces. You , the local cement businesses, have enjoyed near monopoly conditions and price fixing for a long time. This must change and now. Stop making the selfish noises.

  If Dr. Dawson-Amoah is a real strategist, he should know that creating artificial barriers by banning imports is not one of the ways of making a market efficient.
  Why are imports affecting your market? That is because you have overpriced your cement.
  Let competition determine who wins in the market.
  If foreign imports, upon applying logical cost, is cheaper than Ghacem's cement, it can only mean one thing; you are producing cement inefficiently and overcharging Ghanaians for your cement.
  Let market forces prevail and do not ask government to stifle the competition.
  I am shocked that a learned person like Spio Garbrah has agreed to protect an inefficient local cement industry at the expense of cheaper cement for Ghanaians. How do you expect your development agenda to take off if you drive cheaper cement producers away so that inefficient local producers can have a monopoly on the market?
  Cheaper cement means more people, especially civil servants, can build their own homes and relieve the government of the burden to provide them with accommodation.
  Let the market find equilibrium and stop interfering.
  Cement importers are also "Creating more jobs and making financial contribution to the state".
  It is shocking that the ministry of trade will seek to protect inefficient local producers by banning the sale of cheaper cement from regions where cement can be more cheaply produced.
  It is a shame that the ministry will descend into 17th century economics. Even the soviets will not do that in this day and age.

  I tried starting a petition on the internet two years ago on the high cost of cement and got no support. For this I have since become a criminal and have my passport verified specially anytime I come into or go out of Ghana. The fact is that cement costs twice here than in the UK where I have checked it for the last few year. In the UK minimum wages are £6/hr. In this country, the official minimum wage is about ghc6/day. It means that someone on the minimum wage in UK can buy two bags of cement by working an hour. In Ghana, someone on the minimum wage will need to work about 4 to 5 days to buy one single bag of cement. Let them reduce their prices now.
