Ghanaian producers will never improve their total factor productivity (vital for economic growth) until they face competition from the imports.

Government should not heed to their protection pleas. The only thing is to ensure that the imported cement is of better quality than the locally produced ones and yet cheaper.

True, competition must be allowed to prevail, however, tax & duty evasion is unacceptable & this govt should be able to confirm or deny the claims being made. But they are very silent on the matter

Pure market economics at work...increase production so the price will likely fall and the profit margin for the importers will dwindle to put them out of business

There is no doubt there are high demand for cement in Ghana. And this in line with the concept of demand and supply, these manufacturer does intentionally produce less in order for consumers to face shortage and the manufacturers having the opportunity to increase the price.

However, the only way to avoid dramatic price increase is to have more of the product in the market. I am sure it will be sensible this time for Mahama to ignore these calls as eventually in 3years time the price of cement will drop.

Saddest thing for NDC is that, the price drop will happened during NPP time in office and they will receive all the praises. Do it for NDC do it for Ghana and its people.

is it the business of manufacturers to worry about non collection of taxes. they should leave this for GRA. Rather produce more cement an reduce your prices so your competitors will not import cement. Simple economics.

And monopoly keeps the cement price rising. allow people who have means to import to do so. After all Ghana is still below when it comes to infrastructure. allow people to have access to affordable building materials.

By the way, who told them that cement importers don't pay taxes? How do you know that they are "undercutting the local market by avoiding paying tax and duty.."? Don't you think customs and the GRA will be after them? K Man, you seem to be ignorantly taking sides and avoiding some of the real reasons why the local cement manufacturers are scared. It is all about competition and pricing. The local manufacturers are afraid their margins are going to shrink.
