Looking back 5 years Ghana has lost practically all foreign investor confidence already. This government has put unfriendly laws in place like the new GIPC act and new corporation laws requiring local shareholders.
Extractive industries pay royalties, power producers license fees that are prohibitive for many foreigners to invest right now. This is the main reason why there is only talk about solar power instead of action.

Are we doing cost / benefit analysis? Are we only interested in bringing the companies with no plans for them to stay? What is your next neighbor doing? Do we review the process to close loopholes? These are the questions we need to answer. We should not think that business people will not try legally or illegally to outwit the system. Tax incentives are necessary for economic growth but they must be effectively planned, executed and reviewed periodically for corrective action

Whilst small and local companies are harrassed by the GRA, we keep giving tax incentives to white men companies. For example, Alisa Hotel will borrow at 30%plus interest rate to run his business and expand. The Foreign Hotels will borrow at about 2.5% per annum in their countries and when they come, they will be given tax waivers through GIPC and make a wish list wich will be processed and approved. How more silly can we be as a country? When these foreigners make profit, they send it back home putting pressure on the cedi. For example, apart from the Ridge Hospital being so expensive, the first phase alone is abour $360m with a second phae of $400m plus already signed off by Alban. Meawhile other more sophisticated hospitals all over the world do not cost so much. They are using their tax exemptions to bring all sorts of trucks and equipments for this and other projects. How can local construction firms compete? they have brought so many white boys to do jobs locals could do and are spending a fortune on their salaries and allowances tax free life making the Foreign Comapnies enjoy amd loical companies crushing. Alot of the monies these comaonies charge go into their white guys expenses and allowances and first class ticket. We will be paying back in dollars and pounds and Euros why will the cedi not crush? Why will the GRA not suffer? stop chasing the small local businesses and block these manholes.

It is mind boggling the amount of money that is lost to the Government. If the amount of tax incentives were collected the Government would have no need to take a IMF Loan & plunge the country into more debt. However, the NDC are not solely to blame as the last NPP Government promoted the practice of offering tax incentives to foreign companies. This silly policy should be immediately scrapped. Ghana needs to boost its revenue and not reduce it.
