This news item epitomises the problem with our country.

I have nothing against this Indian businessman personally. in fact he is investing in our country and creating jobs.

However, one must ask whether a Ghanaian would be able to go to India and trade in diamonds.

We have sold a foreign entrepreneur to enter our diamond industry and made a fortune. Why do we keep handing our natural wealth over to foreign interests? Why do we not learn to exploit our gold, diamond, oil, gas and other abundant natural resources ourselves?

The short fixes of chasing foreign direct investment is a poor economic strategy which serves only serves to impoverish us.

We must learn to exploit our abundant natural resources ourselves. This is the way to grow our economy and develop.
