  I disagree with induom because such a policy can not work in Ghana or in any developing country. Remember most consumers in developing countries believe that the higher the price of a commodity the higher the quality. I suggest that Mr nduom should try others but this one can help. It would worsen the problem.

  This is a short term policy that can't be sustained. North Korea is a bad example. It's continually under sanctions from the UN and large proportion of it population would starve without food aid.

  Think of this in the longer term. Do you think the EU, US, etc would not respond in kind with import taxes on Ghanaian goods??? Of course they would.
  
  The government needs to make it easier for business to flourish. A fair electricity rate (which should be 1/3 of it's current rate) for businesses would be a good start. A longer term but vital initiative is to TRULY open up the sub region to trade.

  The move to increase prices of imported goods will be pre-mature. How prepared is the local industry to support the production of local goods? Is the economy ready to manufacture to meet the needs of citizenry? Is the government able to hold the support for standardization and export of local goods? i think Paa Kwesi is being futuristic but it is a long term goal.

  Impose higher taxes on imported goods and you'll be causing pain for many who are poor and have to purchase imported goods, particularly from China. If the idea is to impose higher taxes on imported luxuries and certain class of foods, then the plan may not have serious adverse effects on majority of Ghanaians. Ghana, like most countries around the globe, now depends heavily on imported goods due to lack of a strong manufacturing base. Perhaps it'll help to encourage Ghanaians to place emphasis on small scale manufacturing, whereby these potential business persons can grow their businesses while learning from their mistakes or accomplishments. business owners like Nduom and the government should court foreign manufacturers who are facing high production costs and will like to relocate to Ghana. tax incentives for local and foreign businesses will go a long way to help stimulate the economy. higher taxes on imported goods will only cause hardships for more people in the country.
  
  Property owners and businesses are underpaying taxes. The government can look into the feasibility of ensuring that property owners pay taxes each year. Currently, for example, one can buy land and let it sit, and no annual taxes are paid. Many homes are undervalued for tax purposes, and a reassessment nationally needs to be carried out to ensure fair an accurate taxation and thus increase revenue for the government. seek more input from Ghanaians within the country as well as outside, and even from foreign experts, and you'll get so many wonderful ideas.

  I hope ghanaians will listen and consider this sensible suggestion from Dr Nduom.The rapid economic development of South Korea was down to the government banning the use of foreign products.It was even an offence to smoke foreign cigarettes and to possess foreign currencies.The use of locally produced goods led to a very rapid industrial expansion and the creation of more jobs for south Koreans.
