  Mr president, it is clear that under your tenure you have failed to properly regulate the small scale mining sector leading to the rise of galamsey and other illegal mining activities. These activities has been a disaster for Ghana in terms of the damage to the environment, ecology and landscape. Forest reserves have been destroyed, river bodies have been dredged, poisoned and ravaged, farmland/cocoa plantations have been cleared to make way for mining and the list goes on. From prestea to wassa Akronpong in the western region, Twifu Praso to Dunkwa on Offin in the central region, Betenase to Ntoboroso in the Ashanti region and other communities in Brong Ahafo and Northern regions, illegal mining activities and galamsey have flourished without any control from government and security agencies. To make it worse, regulatory bodies like the Mineral Commision, chamber of mines, Environmental Commision who have the mandate to ensure a good regulatory structure in the mining sector have performed abysmally and in certain cases are actively involved in illegal mining activities themselves. So Mr president a much needed restructuring of the mining sector is long overdue, however any actions or plans should be comprehensive and long term focused including reclamation of damaged lands, reforestation, restoration of river bodies and support for affected communities. The environmental and ecological destruction in Ghana due to galamsey and illegal mining will to long felt and will take future generations a long time to restore. This damage will be worse than any economic tribulations currently facing the country at the moment
