We cannot talk about Black Star Line without the names of great Captains and Sailors. My salute goes to Captain Tachie-Mensen,the first African Master to sail across the Atlantic Ocean.
We can't forget other great Black Star Line captains like Capt.Arthur-Walker,Capt.Ziam,Capt.Boahene,Capt.Frimpong etc.
I do still remember how Captain Frimpong allowed me to make a trip from Takoradi to Tema for the first in 1972.
I also salute the old seamen,Oldman Paa Vroom who fought for the Seaman Union in Ghana. The others are Bosun Kweku Eghan,Donkeyman Kwesi Ghartey,Leading hand,Uncle Kwesi Coleangle and others.I welcome Prez Mahama's initiative but I wish the state doesn't become the sole ownership.Thank you.

I even want to go back further to them days...Havana, Columbia, Logozo/prempeh days. Those were the times you needed an "id" to enter Taadi, hehehehee. Taadi wasn't for everybody.

I would like the govt to be a stakeholder, the public and private partnership rather than a full state owned entreprise. The former Black Star Line was poorly managed because we seem not to respect govt properties.I did sail with some of the star line ships in the 70s and I can tell you for a fact that it was badly mismanaged. When I later moved to foreign private shipping companies I saw the difference of time management, administrative efficiency, crew management and cargo arrangement. The Black Star Line officers onboard disregard time, they do whatever they like when they come to Ghana. The officers ashore also do the same, they delay the ships in port for no tangible reason and that comes with unecessary cost.As for administration it was the worst because of many unofficial travels and over invoice payments. Then again, the number of crew onboard each vessel was too many, private companies will never do that. Many atimes, some of the crew carry illegal stuffs and got arrested which also disgraced the liner.Lastly,Black Star Line ships were not getting cargo from overseas to come home.Which means they were running at lost. The more logic reason is that many shipping lines converted into Container carriers and car carriers for rapid loading and discharging. The Black Star Line ships were outmoded and couldn't compete, that's the reason why they collapsed. As we speak of today,we should not repeat the same mistake,it doesn't make sense for govt alone to venture into shipping line business.I do believe that the NDC govt can buy new ships because they have bought 2 or 3 big FPSO for the oilfields already.Ofcourse,it makes a lot of sense to get local ships to participate in the booming martime business here and abroad but we have to tread cautiously.Thank you.

Boy Kofi,i totally agree with you that the revival of the Black Star Line should be based on state and private partnership. To ensure its efficient running and profitability the private partner should be given the responsibility to manage it.Any attempt to make it a total state organization will not work.It will be back to the same old story of losses and its eventual collapse.

I agree with you. No more State own shipping Line. Leave it to Private. Use the money to develop our roads in Tema.

Ghanaian seafarers are doing just fine. No need to resurrect the BSL. It should not have failed to start with, but now that it is gone, just leave it.
