A 35- year-old Nigerian scrap dealer has been remanded into police custody by an Accra circuit court for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl.

The accused, Promise Chiowa, is believed to have for the past two years at Anyaa, a suburb of Accra, been having carnal knowledge of the victim.

The prosecution, lead by ACP Moses Atibilla, told the court that Chiowa in June this year, lured the minor into a room belonging to his wife and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

Making his first appearance in a court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh, Chiowa pleaded not guilty to the charge of defiling a female child under 16 years.

He was however, remanded into police custody until August 14, 2015.

The facts of the case are that the complainant is a social worker resident at Kasoa in the Central Region while the accused is also a resident at Anyaa Market in Accra.

ACP Atibilla said the accused, during the months of June this year, forcibly had sex with the victim and threatened to kill her if she told anybody about it.

He said the victim confided in her peers at school and the authorities of the school were informed who also in turn reported the matter to the Social Welfare Department of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly.

ACP Atibilla said a report was then lodged at the Odorkor Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service and the victim was sent to the Dansoman Polyclinic where she was examined and treated.

The senior police officer said Chiowa was arrested on July 30, 2015 and he admitted the offence in his caution statement.
