  Hardly a day goes by without a report on a child defilement case in the media, and according to child rights groups working on the issue, at least 10 girls under the age 16 are defiled every day in the country.
  
  They say that even though the cases reported in themselves are alarming, they constitute only about 10% of such abuses, as the overwhelming majority of the cases are hushed.
  
  The penalty for defilement was increased in the 1998 amendment to the Criminal Code (ACT 29) to a minimum of seven and a maximum of 25 years without an option of a fine. Yet recent studies show that sexual abuse of children in Ghana is still alarming high.
  
  Figures from the then Ministry for Women and Children Affairs (MOWAC) put the annual case of reported defilement cases at around 800 a year, but according to one of the groups working to stop the practice, Light For Children Ghana, this is only a small portion of an alarming national catastrophe.
  
  For this year alone, Ghana News Agency bulletins have been recording an average of about three defilement case a day.
  
  The majority of the defilement cases are hushed, according to child psychologists, because in some case the victims do not understand what has happened to them or are afraid of being shamed or accused of being bad girls.
  
  Some guardians also prefer to keep such incidence to themselves.
  
  This is especially the case where the abusers happen to be family members. There have also been cases of neighbors, teachers, pastors and all sorts of people abusing girls some as young as two years.
  
  There are also instances where guardians go to the police, but later stop following the case and give up because they find the processes cumbersome, studies indicate.
  
  Making the situation worse, according to Mrs Juliana Azumah, the last Minister for MOWAC, was that the over 50,000 children living and working on the country’s streets were often taken advantage of by sexual predators or run to commercial sex as way of making a living.
  
  Also in certain parts of the country such as in parts of the Upper West Region, for instance, Action Aid Ghana, reports that an average of 50 young girls below the ages of 15 and 17 are abducted for marriage every year in the Jirapa, Lambussie/Karni and Sissala East districts.
  
  Figures at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) National Secretariat indicate that boys are also sometimes abused sexually, but the vast majority of the victims are girls.

  Two suspected fraudsters have been arrested by the police for having allegedly defrauded six people to the tune of GH¢100, 000 under the pretext of selling a car to them.
  
  The suspects are Kwabena Boakye, 40 and Richard Osei Bonsu 41.
  
  They were nabbed after several complaints had been lodged at the Odorkor District Police Command about their nefarious activities.
  
  Briefing DAILY GUIDE, DSP Emmanuel Osei Agboda, Odorkor District Crime Officer, said the suspects have specific car garages that they operate at Odorkor, a suburb of Accra.
  
  He said the suspects, who claim to be car dealers, lure their victims to selected garages to inspect the vehicles of their choice.
  
  Thereafter, the suspects, according to DSP Osei Agboda, tell the prospective buyers that the caretakers at the garage often added their own profits to the prices of the vehicles and that they (suspects) could lead them (buyers) to the real owners who would give them (vehicles) to them at cheaper prices.
  
  Suspects then lead the victims to a supposed owner who is also their accomplice, to transact the business with.
  
  The vehicle is then sold at a cheaper price to victims and the money collected by the supposed owner.
  
  Having made the payment, the Crime Officer hinted, the victims were given the keys to go and pick the vehicle parked in the garage in the company of the two arrested suspects; but on the way, they (suspects) would escape, leaving the victims to their fate.
  
  Findings
  
  DSP Emmanuel Osei Agboda said after receiving several complaints about their activities and description, police mounted
  
  surveillance on suspects and apprehended them from their hideouts at Ablekuma and Race Course in the Ga Central Municipality.
  
  During the month of May 2013, one Samuel Swanzy, who was said to be looking for a second-hand Samsung truck to buy, was introduced to Kwabena Boakye, whose name was given to Samuel Swanzy as Brother Kofi by a friend.
  
  On 17/05/2013 Mr. Samuel Swanzy, who lived at Afram Plains, arrived in Accra together with his brother and met the said Brother Kofi for the transaction.
  
  Kwabena Boakye then led him and his brother to Asoredanho near Dansoman Junction where he pointed at a second-hand Samsung truck to them and told them that it belonged to his (Boakye’s) brother who he said was at Malam with the documents covering the vehicle.
  
  After inspecting the truck the victim expressed interest in it.
  
  According to the Crime Officer, Kwabena Boakye then took the victim and his brother to a certain house at Gbawe where Richard Osei Bonsu was waiting for them.
  
  After bargaining, both suspects collected an amount of GH¢10,000 from the Swanzy (complainant) as part payment. Having collected the money, the suspects pretended they were going to Dansoman Asoredanho to take the truck to the DVLA office for registration together with the victim and his brother when all of a sudden, they took to their heels.
  
  The victim and his brother went back with intent to take the said truck only to be told that it did not belong to the suspects.
  
  A complaint was lodged with the police and whilst the case was under investigation, the accused persons went to commit a similar offence and were arrested.
  
  Suspects would be sent to court soon.
  
  He urged all who might have been defrauded by the suspects to report at the Odorkor Police Station.

  William Gem and Reuben Edze, Welding Apprentice, who allegedly defiled the victim on two occasions, have denied the charge.
  
  The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh has remanded the accused persons into Police custody to reappear on August 13.

  Nigerian student in the United Kingdom has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud charges. According to BBC, the man had by the time of his arrest defrauded two women 250,000 euros by pretending to be an American Soldier serving in Afghanistan and in dire need of money to facilitate his leaving.
  
  The 37 year-old man met his victims through online dating website Match.Com and used a photo of a soldier as his profile picture using the alias Captain Morgan Travis. The main victim of the scam was a Danish widow, he contacted 7 days after joining the site. The two begun having conversations on various platforms, the defendant however said he could not hold video conversations citing security risks in Afghanistan, which the victim believed.
  
  
  
  
  
  The defendant late told the victim he can only arrange to see her, but she would have to help pay administration fee, which he promised to return. She sent 40,000 euros before being informed “Travis” had been arrested for money laundering. She also sent a further 211,euros before the bank stopped payments and informed the authorities. Even after discovering the real identity, she continued having a relationship with him, after he said he committed fraud because he owned Nigerian militants money and received death threats. He also defrauded a different victim 1,000 euros.
  
  This incidents comes at the backdrop of the extradition of Nigerian nationals to the US, to face fraud charges after a 15 year internet scam ring. The six are charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy to commit identity theft, use of unauthorized account access devices, theft of U.S. government funds and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
