It happens often. Because sometimes the method used by the police to have the accused confess might be illegal or amount to coercion. On some instance, the accused may say that he or she did not make the statement attributed to him or her. So, the court still has to hear his side of the story in the open court.
Throughout the world, police are found to plant evidence against people and sometimes write statements and force the accused to sign. Another trick often used is when the accused is given a paper to write their statement but few lines are still remaining empty. This allows bad actors to add some few lines admitting to have committed the crime, after the accused has signed the statement and left. This is why you should always cross any empty space whenever you provide a statement. Draw a line accross the space left. That way, if anyone attempts to add anything to it later after you had signed and left, it will still look canceled.

It won't even surprise me to hear that the evidence against this man does not support the police' theory that he killed the wife. The court needs to know the facts.
