  Arresting people demonstrating against illegal galamsey and high cost of living is not a good sign for any country. This is typically a prelude to mass chaos and violence. Warn them and release them but the demonstrations must continue until their concerns are addressed. This is how a weak and dying government behaves. Illegal mining has done irreparable damage to the country. Generations of people will be lost as a results. I have one message for those who don’t allow their party to be criticised for causing the problem and who are always defending this criminal behaviour: you will regret in the near future when you see how many people will suffer as a result of the very selfish people you are protecting.

I wish we could all condemn this lawless act done in the name of demonstration. I doubt if there is any well meaning Ghanaian who is happy about the current nature of our water bodies but the approach of Democracy Hub is not the way to go.

I was referring to a specific situation where the government views any demonstrations as person attack against it and therefore try to use our security organisations to stop it. There is no indication that these demonstrators damaged properties. Can you provide any evidence to the contrary? Share with us. Of course I condemn violence and any illegal activities, and this also includes the government’s actions.

They are under arrest because they committed crimes. Demonstrations are perfectly legal in Ghana but violence is not allowed so please just allow the law to run.

  Article 12(2):Every person in Ghana, whatever his race, place of origin, political opinion, colour, religion, creed or gender shall be entitled to the fundamental human rights and freedoms of the individual contained in this Chapter but subject to respect for the rights and freedoms of others and for the public interest
  
  The Constitutional right to Demonstrate is found in Article 21(1)
  21 (1) All persons shall have the right to- (a) freedom of speech and expression, which shall include freedom of the press and other media;
  (b) freedom of thought, conscience and belief, which shall include academic freedom;
  (c) freedom to practise any religion and to manifest such practice;
  (d) freedom of assembly including freedom to take n processions and demonstrations.
  (e) freedom of association, which shall include freedom to form or join trade unions or other associations, national and international, for the protection of their interest;
  
  Look at the 21(1)(d) The case law everyy lawyer know is NPP v IGP but it's not absolute! The caveat is Article 12(2) above.
  
  The truth is in All Criminal matters the business of the Lawyer is to fight to Defend the Client whilst the Prosecutirs also fight to prove the case against the alleged criminal.
  Happily in Ghana the law gives you the freedom to defend to the hilt whilst the Prosecutor also must establish his case against the person beyond reasonable doubt The Judge is a referee.
  A reading of Article 19 tells it all that is why one is not guilty until proven so by a court of competent jurisdiction!!
  Emotions have no place here it's a question of law so let them go through the process There are enough safe nets in the law it gives everybody the chance to state his side of the case and the Judge decides based on the facts before him or her.

  Over five decades on this earth and I have never taken part in a single demonstration. In some cases, I even point out to those who are eager to demonstrate that we haven't fully exhausted the procedure for amicable resolution of the issues at stake but most won't listen.
  
  Then there's always that one or more stupid human beings among peaceful demonstrators who want to throw stones at the police, burn tyres on roads paid for by our taxes or destroy vehicles. Seriously, I don't get it and I try as much as possible to distance myself from such blatant stupidity.
