Madam Charlotte died after an alleged assault
A landlady in Agona Nyakrom in Ghana’s Central Region has died following an alleged assault linked to a dispute over sanitation, police say.
The woman, identified as Madam Charlotte, reportedly became involved in an argument with a tenant after the tenant defecated into a polythene bag and left it in front of the landlady’s room.
According to information gathered by Ghone News correspondent Yaw Boagyan, the tenant explained that she was suffering from a stomach upset and was unable to reach a public toilet in time.
Residents in the area are said to rely on public toilet facilities, as there are no toilets within the houses.
An argument ensued when Madam Charlotte questioned why the waste had been left at her doorstep rather than in front of the tenant’s own room. The disagreement was said to have initially subsided.
However, the situation later escalated after the tenant accused the landlady of discussing the incident with other people.
The tenant then reportedly called her grandson, identified as Paa Kwesi.
On his arrival, Paa Kwesi is alleged to have assaulted Madam Charlotte, reportedly using a belt.
Shortly after the incident, the landlady’s health deteriorated.
She was rushed to the Nyakrom Health Centre after experiencing complications related to high blood pressure.
She was later referred to a government hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The matter has since been reported to the Agona Nyakrom Police Command, which has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The body of Madam Charlotte has been deposited at the Agona Swedru mortuary for autopsy and preservation. Police say no arrests have been made so far.
