The University of Ghana, Legon (UG) has clarified that the individual captured in a viral video involving an alleged assault by one of its security officers is not a student of the institution.

A statement dated Saturday, April 11, 2026, explained that the incident, which has been widely circulated on social media, involved a young man who was reportedly apprehended on suspicion of theft.

“Preliminary information suggests that the individual involved is not a student of the University but a person who had been reportedly apprehended by the security man on suspicion of theft,” the statement said.

The University of Ghana explained that Management had been alerted to the footage, which allegedly shows a member of the Safety and Security Services Directorate (SSSD) assaulting the individual.

“The attention of Management of the University of Ghana has been drawn to a video circulating on social media in which a member of the Safety and Security Services Directorate (SSSD) is seen allegedly assaulting a young man,” it noted.
