The Ghana Police Service has uncovered a disturbing syndicate operating in the Ashanti and Bono Regions, where nude videos and images of minors were allegedly being sold to individuals in Australia.

During a press conference held at the Police Headquarters in Accra on May 12, 2026, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed that in 2025, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation Victim Identification Team arrested an individual who had allegedly received child sexual exploitation material from facilitators based in Ghana.

She explained that the suspect, who is currently standing trial in Australia, revealed their modus operandi during interrogation. Following this revelation, the Ghana Police Service, AFP, and Interpol launched a joint investigation, which eventually uncovered a syndicate operating in the Ashanti and Bono Regions.

“According to the intelligence report, an Australian offender who was arrested in 2025 and is currently standing trial in Australia received child sexual exploitation material from facilitators based in Ghana.

“Records further show that the offender transferred funds to the facilitators in Ghana in exchange for child sexual exploitation material involving victims also located in Ghana. The Australian authorities, therefore, requested the Ghana Police Service to conduct investigations aimed at rescuing the victims and arresting the suspects,” she stated.

Lydia Donkor further revealed that, through investigations conducted in collaboration with Interpol, the police arrested a mother and her son for allegedly participating in the sale of nude images and videos involving victims aged between seven and 13 years in the Ashanti Region.

“Further investigations conducted by a team comprising officers from Interpol Accra and the Child Digital Forensics and Cybercrime Units, under the supervision of the Director-General of CID, led to the arrest of two suspects and the rescue of two victims aged between seven and 13 years in the Ashanti Region,” she added.

She also disclosed that subsequent investigations uncovered another syndicate operating in the Bono Region, where two additional victims, aged six and seven, were rescued.

“Subsequently, one additional suspect was arrested, and two more victims aged six and seven years were rescued in the Bono Region,” she noted.

Lydia Donkor added that all suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while the rescued victims are receiving care from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Units (DOVVSU) in their respective regions.
