The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a University of Cape Coast student who was found dead after she went missing for several days.
According to a statement shared on its official social media handles on June 16, 2026, the suspect, Michael Mensah, was arrested on June 15, 2026.
The police added that the suspect was the person who drove the deceased to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen.
“The Ghana Police Service has arrested suspect Michael Mensah, aged 39, for the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu. The suspect was arrested by the IGP’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on June 15, 2026, at about 1915 hours at the Pedu Lorry Station, Cape Coast, following sustained intelligence-led operations.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that on June 11, 2026, at about 1848 hours, the suspect, who claims to be a teacher by profession but also works as a driver, picked the deceased up from Ayensu Plaza within the University of Cape Coast (UCC) hostel enclave and took her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen,” the police said.
It added: “Investigations continue, and any further development will be duly communicated.”
Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a 20-year-old student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), was found dead at a beach in the Central Region after being reported missing by her family.
According to reports, Innocentia, a Level 200 student, was last seen on June 11, 2026, at Ayensu Plaza Hostel on the UCC campus. She was reportedly wearing a black dress when she left the hostel.
Her family subsequently launched a search and appealed to the public for assistance. Sadly, the search ended in tragedy when her body was discovered on June 12, 2026, at Hatchland Beach Resort near the university.
