Illiteracy is not merely the inability to read or write. That inability to read or write, adversely affects one's thinking, behaviour and actions in the modern world. Unfortunately, it is mainly the caliber of such people who are driving most of the commercial vehicles and therefore carrying the most people on our roads. How these functionally illiterate drivers manage to acquire driving licences is what we should be worried about.

For such people, safety on our roads is guaranteed by black magic charms or more than a tot of akpeteshie and not by common-sense or a good road worthy vehicle or good eyesight. And even more surprising is that when the combination of all these festering adverse conditions evolve up and blow up in our faces, we express shock and disbelief.
