Police intercept canoe with 2,213 suspected Indian hemp slabs on River Volta

The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a wooden canoe carrying 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island.

The interception was made by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada at about 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a routine patrol.

The occupants of the canoe reportedly abandoned the vessel and fled after sighting the police.

According to a statement issued by the Tema Regional Police Command on Friday, September 18, a search of the canoe uncovered 29 sacks containing 2,213 slabs of the suspected narcotic substance, wrapped in yellow cellotape.

“Also found in the canoe were fourteen (14) 25-litre gallons, twelve (12) of which contained premixed fuel, and two Yamaha outboard motors, one 40HP and the other 30HP,” the statement said.

The suspected narcotic substances have since been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters, while arrangements are being made to transport the outboard motors and premixed fuel to the station for further investigation.

The Police Command said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the persons who abandoned the canoe and its contents.

It has also appealed to anyone with information about the owners or occupants of the canoe to report to the nearest police station or provide the information to the police to assist with the ongoing investigation.

The Command further cautioned the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances.
