A woman stole a dead mother’s identity to trick her way into Britain – and then defrauded taxpayers out of more than £100,000.
Illegal immigrant Catherine Kyie, 33, was jailed for impersonating a mother who died after childbirth to get from Ghana into the UK.

A court heard mother-of-three Kyie then claimed family tax credits, child benefit payments and was paid by the NHS over eight years.
Kyie pretended to be tragic Joyce Pokuaa – another Ghanaian woman who had married a Dutch man and started their own family.
Prosecutor Roger Griffiths said: ‘But she died three months after giving birth to her son in 2003.

‘But it meant she would have been free to travel through Europe because of her marriage. Kyie stole her identity and took on her name.’
Kyie’s then allowed fellow Ghanian Kenneth Boateng, 45, to pretend to be her husband so he could illegally get into Britain in 2005.
The couple and their three children lived in Britain claiming state benefits and child tax credits.
But Cardiff Crown Court heard they were finally rumbled when relatives of the dead mother’s 10-year-old son wanted him to come to the country.

Mr Griffiths said: ‘He was unable to travel because it was discovered his passport had been renewed in 2009 by Boateng and a woman claiming to be his mother – although she had been dead for five or six years.
‘That passport was eventually found at their home.
‘Police also discovered a Dutch identity card and a passport in the name of Joyce Pokuaa but showing Kyie’s photograph.’

The court heard two of the couple’s three children, aged five, seven and 10, were born in the UK.

The ID fraud family lived illegally in Newport, South Wales, for eight years before they were caught.
Kyie worked illegally as a cleaner in NHS hospitals and universities, while Boateng worked as a driver and late night security guard.
Claire Pickthall, defending Kyie, said: ‘It is a serious offence and she accepts her motivation was gain.
‘But the gain was only to come to the UK to have a better life for herself and her family – nothing more sinister than that.
‘She has worked hard all the time she has been here.

‘The mother of three was arrested along with Boateng who at first claimed he had been duped and thought his wife’s name was Joyce.
But the couple eventually pleaded guilty to 14 charges of fraud by misrepresentation to enter and remain in the UK illegally.
Judge Patrick Murphy told Kyie she was the ‘prime mover’ in the fraud.
He said: ‘You obtained benefits through employment and tax benefits to the cost of £104,562.
‘

The commission of all your offences is based on the identity theft of Joyce Pokuaa by you.’
Judge Murphy said Kyie began stealing the dead mother’s identity documents in 2004 – just months after she gave birth to a son and died in Ghana following childbirth complications.

He told the pair it was now their children who had become the innocent victims.
Judge Murphy told them: ‘You took the chance – they will pay the price.
‘Possession and use of false identity documnets are serious offences and go to the heart of undermining the immigration processes of this country.

‘They deprive others of legal entry to the country and employment and allow false benefits to be maintained at cost to the legitimate British tax payer.’
Kyie was imprisoned for 15 months and Boateng for 12 months.
Both were told they would be automatically deported after serving their sentences

Ambassador expressed worry about the state of Nigerians in distress in China.

There are currently over 400 Nigerians serving terms in various jails in China, Nigerian Ambassador to China, Aminu Wali, has said.

Mr. Wali also disclosed that 80 per cent of the prisoners committed drug related offences. He also said about 80 per cent of the crimes committed by Africans were committed by Nigerian citizens.

The Ambassador was speaking in an interactive session with journalists in Beijing, on Monday ahead of President Goodluck Jonathan’s state visit to the People’s Republic of China beginning on Tuesday.

“We certainly have big issues with drug related crimes committed by Nigerians in China and when you look at the whole of Africa you find out that about 80 percent of all the offences and crimes committed by Africans in China about 80 percent is committed by Nigerians; that is why I think we are having running battle to try and control the situation.

“But we need assistance from back home, from the security agencies manning our exits and entry points in Nigeria to be more alert and vigilant to make sure these type of individuals do not escape and pass through our routes to come into, not only to China but any other country in the world because drug trafficking as it were, drug is the biggest problem that we have as far as Nigerians are concerned,” he said.

Mr. Wali further said that a lot of the Nigerian prisoners don’t come to China with Nigerian passports.

“A lot of them don’t come in with their real names so sometimes with difficulties we only know when they are taken prisoners or they are sentenced and they are looking for consular visits. And of course if a Nigerian comes with the Ghanaian or Malawian passport and the Malawian consular goes there, he says no that is not from my country and eventually they now have to revert to us. We have to go and confirm these are Nigerians and then of course we take over and we give them necessary support,” he said.

The ambassador said the federal government and the National Assembly should take action to support the efforts to help Nigerians in distress abroad; and at the same time support the embassies outside to “give more consular support to Nigerian prisoners or Nigerians who find themselves not only in prisons but in that strange difficulties in the host countries.”

He said Embassy staff sometimes contribute money among themselves to help Nigerians in distress in China and that not all the Nigerians in prison or in distress in China are criminals.

“They may not be criminals, they come in, misfortune befell them and nowhere to turn to except they come to the embassy. And when they come to the embassy as a Nigerian they feel at home so we ought to be able to see what we can do to assist and sometimes out of sympathy, if we have to chip in, we make contributions from all Nigerian members of the embassy to help them and quite often this is the case,” he said.

Mr. Wali added that there were many Nigerians in China, who work hard at their businesses, are creative with it and are successful at it, saying “unfortunately good things don’t travel that fast but bad things make big bang.”

He said the Nigerian government needs to do more to encourage young people to feel secured in Nigeria and not have the urge to travel out and engage in illegal activities to make money.

More Ghanaians are currently serving different sentences at the various penitentiaries in Turkey for banned drugs related offences.

These people, including females, have been sentenced to various prison sentences by the Turkish authorities.

Ghana High Commissioner to Turkey, Alhaji Abass Ibrahim made this known in an exclusive interview with DAILY GUIDE.

He said some Ghanaians have lately adopted Turkey as a safe haven for transporting illicit drugs.

Alhaji Abass said modern sophisticated machines planted at the various airports in Turkey have contributed to the arrest of these illicit drug dealers.

Alhaji Abass lamented that “the common offence sending Ghanaians to prison in Turkey was mostly drug related offence.”

According to him, other offences that are sending Ghanaians to prison in Turkey like “living without permit and other crimes are minimal,” reiterating “drugs are sending more Ghanaians to prison here.”

Alhaji Abass said the Ghana Embassy offered legal and other key support to help arrest Ghanaians in Turkey.

He sternly warned Ghanaians that have the idea of smuggling illicit drugs to Turkey to quickly change their minds.

According to him, Turkish security agents were well-trained and equipped with modern gadgets to detect illicit drugs hidden on people.

He stressed that anybody that would try smuggling illicit drugs to Turkey to make money would surely be apprehended at the airport.

In another statement, he said, any attempt by Ghanaians to make Turkey their preferred destination for transportation of illicit drugs could taint Ghana’s image.

Alhaji Abass said the Turkey Consulate in Ghana has been issuing visas to Ghanaians lately to visit Turkey and engage in legal business.

He warned that any attempt by Ghanaians to make Turkey their destination for illicit drugs might force the Turkey Embassy to refuse Ghanaians Turkey visas.

Alhaji Abass entreated Ghanaians in Turkey to lead upright lifestyles and serve as good ambassadors of Ghana to help deepen the good relationship existing between Ghana and Turkey.

Amoateng Jailed 10 Years!

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) ex-Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkoranza North was busted on December 11, 2005 in the US over allegations of trafficking heroine.

Judge David G. Tragger, delivered the judgment on December 12, 2007.

The judgment comes several months after Eric Amoateng and his counsel John Patten entered a guilt plea on charges of conspiracy to import at least one kilogramme of heroine into the United States of America.

The Enquirer has learnt that Eric Amoateng, who initially pleaded not guilty when he was arrested by US Custom Officials, will be serving his jail term at a correctional facility in, CI Moshannon Valley, Philipsburg, PA. He will be confined in a very secured facility.

"Upon release, from imprisonment, the defendant (Amoateng) shall be on supervised release for a term of 5 years. The defendant shall report to the probation office in the district of which the defendant is released within 72 hours of release from the custody of the Bureau of Prisons," the judge added.

Amoateng will also be expected to pay a total criminal monetary penalty under the schedule of payment in the sum of $100 and would also as part of the regulations regarding additional supervised release terms, be forbidden to re-enter the United States illegally if deported after his sentence.

Similarly, the court ordered that Eric Amoateng not commit another federal, state or focal crime, whilst under supervised release.

The Presiding judge, Justice Tragger, said Eric Amoateng should not unlawfully possess a controlled substance (such as cocaine, heroine etc) and refrain from use of any controlled substance.

The Eastern District court of New York also ordered that Amoateng, upon release shall submit to one drug test within 15 days of release from imprisonment and at least two periodic drug tests thereafter, as determined by a court.

Eric Amoateng shall not also possess any firearm, ammunition, destructive device, or any other dangerous weapon.

Court documents also suggest that Eric Amoateng's supervised release will have to adhere to the 13-point standard conditions of supervision release as follows:

1) The defendant shall not leave the judicial district without the permission of the court or probation officer,

2) Defendant shall report to the probation officer and shall submit a truthful and complete written report within the first five days of each month,

3) Defendant shall answer truthful all inquiries by the probation officer and follow the instructions of the probation officer,

4) Defendant shall support his dependants and meet their family responsibilities,

5) Defendant shall work regularly at a lawful occupation, unless excused by the probation officer for schooling, training, or other accept1ble reasons.

6) Similarly, Amoateng is to notify his probation officer at least ten days prior to change in residence or employment,

7) Defendant shall refrain from excessive use of alcohol and shall not purchase, possess, use, distribute or administer a controlled substance or a paraphernalia related to a controlled substance, except as prescribed by a physician,

8) The defendant shall not frequent where controlled substances are illegally sold, used, distributed or administered,

9) Defendant shall not associate with any persons engaged in criminal activity and shall not associate with any person convicted of a felony, unless granted permission to do so by the probation officer.

Amoateng shall,

10) permit probation officer to visit him at any time at home or elsewhere and shall permit confiscation of any contraband observed in plain view of the probation officer,

11) Defendant, shall notify the probation officer within 72 hours of being arrested or questioned by law enforcement officer,

12) Defendant shall not enter into any agreement to act as an informer or special agent of a law enforcement agency without the permission of the court and

13) As directed by the probation officer, the defendant shall notify third parties of risks that may be occasioned by the defendant's criminal record or personal history or characteristics and shall permit the probation officer to make such notifications and confirm the defendant's compliance with such notification.

Reliable information chanced upon by your incontrovertible ModernGhana have given strong credence that one of the most influential traditional rulers in the Ashanti Region, Nana Osei Kwame Ababio, Tetremhene Of The Tetrem Traditional Area, within the region is wanted by some Ghanaians in Canada for Multiple Visa Fraud running to the tune of about Canadian$600,000

Reports indicate that the Ashanti chief in question mobilized the money from about 30 unsuspecting Ghanaians living in Canada who wanted their wives and other family members to join them in Canada.

The victims revealed that Nana Osei Kwame Ababio promised to add their relations to his traditional delegation or entourage to bring them to Canada but have since 2011 not fulfilled his side of the bargain and has bolted away with the cash.

According to sources, the chief turned visa contractor visited Toronto last two years after which he decided to start smuggling illegal immigrants into Canada.

He therefore entered into a contract with the victims who live in Toronto but wanted their husbands, wives, sisters, brothers and loved ones to join them.

They were made to pay between CAN$8,000 to CAN$10,000 dollars to cover processing of documents for visa, medicals, tickets and passport which they all paid in full.

The chief turned visa contractor told the victims that the Canadian embassy in Accra was prepared to grant up to 30 members of his retinue visa and wanted to use the opportunity offered him to cover members of the victims to get visa to Canada.

It turned out that this chief who can move the king of Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to attend events in his traditional area was only deceiving them.

All attempts to reach him on phone have not been successful as he either do not pick international calls suspecting it might be coming from his victims in Canada giving his pursuers the only option to leave a message on his phone but even that he does not call back.

The visa contractor, who recently held a durbar to celebrate a speech and prize giving day in his town which was attended by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is believed to be hiding in and around his house either in Accra or in his hometown in the Ashanti Region.

Several attempts by the victims to get him in his house in Accra or in his home town in the Ashanti Region to retrieve their monies have proved futile.

Following this revelation, the victims have mounted a wild hunt for the Tetremhene from all corners of the world.

'We are keeping his name for now giving him the chance to do justice to us by paying back our money as soon as possible. If by the first quarter of the year 2013, he fails to refund our monies, we will go all out to smoke him out from his hole like a rat,' one of the victims hinted.
