For God's sake, these stolen items are just material goods, not a human life. In countries where they have far more sensible sentencing guidelines, a crime of this nature will attract one or more of either a community sentence, fine or short custodial sentence.
We really ridicule ourselves with these sentences which suggest we value these material items so much than even human life. When you have even 3-10 year olds owning phones, tablets, laptops, etc here, it should tell you just how ordinary these items are here.....but not in good old Ghana where they're valued as if they were handed over straight from God.
20 years indeed!! Utter nonsense! And we wonder why our jails are full to ludicrous levels and have become cesspits.

Read the Article well. What of Raping the girl? Isn't that enough for sending him to Jail?

The only reason you feel so strongly about my condemnation of the sentencing for this crime is because you obviously are stuck in the pitiful ignorance and stupidity that you find yourself in wherever you are in Ghana. Maybe if you travelled and broadened your thinking a bit, you'd soon grasp and appreciate the point I made earlier.
It's obvious you've never lived and experienced life anywhere outside of Ghana, otherwise you'd realise rape and robbery isn't confined within the borders of Ghana and when it takes place in other parts of the world where judges engage their brains (unlike most judges in Ghana), you do not get a 25 year jail sentence. Do you think there are not far worse crimes that take place in other parts of the world?
If you wish to learn something valuable and sensible, I dare you to research or ask others who're much travelled and far knowledgeable than you, what sentence a similar crime in the developed world would attract. It's not about leniency, it's about common sense, for if you deem 25 years fitting for the crime committed by this offender, what then for a murderer.....a 1000 years?
Then again this sentence by a Ghanaian judge holds little surprise to me, nor does your reaction. After all, this is the same country where a person can steal a chicken and get sentenced to a number of years in jail and will most likely get lynched by lunatics like yourself. Yes, a lousy chicken that costs less than the minimum hour's wage in probably every 1st world country!
The same country where I learned a few weeks ago a pregnant woman got sentenced by another loony judge to 5 years in jail, simply because she owed (not stole) and failed to pay a 3,000 cedi debt, the equivalent of approximately a paltry £600 or $1,000!
It was bad enough for the woman to be in poverty (as it the case with many in Ghana) but to then be punished for her plight and being unable to pay a debt, simply said it all about the insanity that reigns in the Ghanaian judicial system. For that reason, a poor child had to be born and raised in a Ghana jail for 5 bloody years. I bet you feel that's justice too huh?
Engage your brain fella !!

These judges are wicked!!!! People in government are stealing millions and they go away freely when they are caught. Why so many years for this poor unemployed. They have to be realistic and humane.

In my book, it's not only bonkers, but laughable for any judge to impose a sentence that's simply determined on the basis of the value placed on the stolen item or items in Ghana.
I can guarantee you no judge in the developed world will ever jail anyone for stealing a mobile phone, laptop or tablet, as they're practically insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
It makes a complete mockery of our sentencing guidelines and judicial system in general, in the eyes of the outside world.
