  Why is there such a widespread problem with illegal ECG connections? The cause of the problem has a lot to do with the lengthy delays and high cost of obtaining ECG connections. Certain electricians represent themselves as authorised ECG contractors and provide fast, low cost meter connections. The customers enjoy their metered power for some time and then unexpectedly they find out that their connection was not authorised. They are disconnected and worse, arrested. ECG provides one of the worst electricity services in the world.
  
  The solution is competition by private electricity companies. Many countries do this. If you get slow services from ECG, go to another electricity company. ECG should be sold on the Ghana stock exchange and other companies with good customer service record should be invited to operate in Ghana. Furthermore, smart meters should be approved so that people with wind and solar power can be paid by the electricity market for power that they send into the grid at peak times. This will help fix the dumsor generation problems besetting Ghana.
