Aspiring parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Asante Mampong constituency, Beatrice Owarewa Siaw, popularly known as Nana Yaa, has expressed concern over the recent surge in sachet water prices across the country.

Speaking on the issue in amedia interview shared on social media on April 17, 2026, she described the situation as “disgraceful,” noting that water, which was once sold for as low as 10 pesewas, has now climbed to nearly GHC 1 in some areas.

“Water is life. Something that was 10 pesewas, 15 pesewas, even 40 or 50 pesewas, is now climbing to almost one cedi. It’s disgraceful,” she lamented.

Siaw emphasised that while the cost of essential commodities such as water continues to rise, salaries of ordinary Ghanaians remain stagnant.

She argued that if water prices are increasing, then wages should also be adjusted to enable citizens to afford basic necessities.

“Water is increasing, fine. Then the average pay of Ghanaians should increase so that we can pay for water, since water is life,” she stated.

Her comments come in the wake of the Sachet Water Producers Association’s recent announcement of price increments, which sparked public outcry.

Although the Ministry of Trade and Industry, led by sector minister Elizabeth Adjare, intervened to halt the proposed hikes, reports indicate that some parts of the country have already seen changes, with sachet water now selling at 70 pesewas instead of the previous 50 pesewas.
