A heated exchange took place between former Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Kwatei Titus Glover and Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti Morkwa, David Theophilus Dominic Vondee, over claims linking drug-related crimes to political administrations.

The discussion on JoyNews on June 22, 2026, centred on whether Ghana was becoming a transit hub for global drug trafficking following the latest interception by Australian authorities of about 320kg of methamphetamine worth around US$208 million that was shipped from Ghana to Sydney, hidden in containers labelled as charcoal.

Three people have been charged in connection with the operation, including suspects linked to logistics and identity fraud.

The drugs were detected at the port and removed in a controlled sting, with investigations now ongoing in both Australia and Ghana to uncover the wider trafficking network behind the shipment.

Glover, in his submission, questioned why such cases appear to be common under NDC governments, suggesting a pattern in the country’s security situation.

He raised concerns about recent incidents and pointed to past cases he believes support his claim.

“But the question you ask yourself is, why is this rampant when the NDC government is in power?” he said.

Vondee pushed back against the claim, arguing that crime should not be given political colour and warned against making unsubstantiated allegations.

He referenced past arrests and convictions involving politicians across party lines to support his argument.

“You see the problem? Is that it? You see the problem? We've seen sitting members of parliament arrested as NPP and jailed for drugs. We've seen all that… I mean, I don't know why crime is always having political color when the NPP wants to talk. He is my big brother and I think he knows better,” he said.

Glover responded by questioning Vondee’s reaction, insisting that the issue being discussed was the weakness of the security system and its impact on crime levels.

He maintained that drug-related incidents appear more frequent under NDC administrations.

“Why is Vondee uncomfortable? Why are you on a high horse? We are dealing with issues. When the security network is so weak, this is the price that you pay,” he said.

“If you cannot sit, you just walk out. We are dealing with drugs that is so prevalent anytime your government is in power,” he added.

Vondee rejected the claim, insisting there was no evidence to support the assertion that drug crimes are tied to a particular political party.

He challenged Glover to provide specific names of NDC officials allegedly involved in such cases.

“That must not pass because you don’t have the evidence to back that,” he said.

Glover maintained his position, citing past drug-related cases in various parts of the country.

“I will continue to repeat what I'm saying. When NDC is in power, that is where you see the cocaine people at their best. How do I substantiate? It's showing. Didn't it happen in Pedu worth $350 million. Oyarifa $2.1 million, Sekondi, I've even forgotten the figure, now it's in Australia. It is the image of the country that has been dented,” he said.

Vondee countered again, pointing to past cases involving members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and rejecting attempts to generalise crime along party lines.

“That when the NDC is in power, I mean, that is not fair. Do you know, in this country, where an NPP sitting member of Parliament was arrested and jailed for drugs?.. I mean, that is not fine,” he said.

Read excerpts from their arguments below:

Glover: But the question you ask yourself is, why is this rampant when NDC government is in power?

Vondee: You see the problem? Is that it? You see the problem? We've seen sitting members of parliament arrested as NPP and jailed for drugs. We've seen all that… I mean, I don't know why crime is always having political color when the NPP wants to talk. He is my big brother and I think he knows better.

Glover: Why is Vondee uncomfortable? Why are you on a high horse? We are dealing with issues. When the security network is so weak, this is the price that you pay. Why are you angry? If you cannot sit, you just walk out. We are dealing with drugs that is so prevalent anytime your government is in power.

Vondee: Again, that must not pass because you don’t have the evidence to back that.

Glover: I will continue to repeat what I'm saying. When NDC is in power, that is where you see the cocaine people at their best. How do I substantiate? It's showing. Didn't it happen in Pedu worth $350 million. Oyarifa $2.1 million, Sekondi, I've even forgotten the figure, now it's in Australia. It is the image of the country that has been dented.

Vondee: That when the NDC is in power, I mean, that is not fair. Do you know, in this country, where an NPP sitting member of Parliament was arrested and jailed for drugs?.. I mean, that is not fine.

Glover: What is not fine? Are you not champions of probity, accountability, and social justice?

Vondee: That probity and accountability does not mean you should make wild allegations without substantiating them. Name one or two NDC members of Parliament or any NDC member involved in drugs. Name them.
