'Agbeli kaklo was scarce under NPP, abundant under NDC' – Divine Agorhom

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Divine Agorhom, has sparked a debate over Ghana’s economic conditions, using the availability of the popular street snack agbeli kaklo as an indicator of the state of the economy.

According to Agorhom, agbeli kaklo is difficult to find when the NPP is in government but becomes widely available when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in power.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on August 18, 2026, he said the availability of the cassava-based snack reflects the purchasing power and economic circumstances of ordinary Ghanaians.

“When MPP is in government, it is always difficult to get agbeli kaklo. Now there is so much agbeli kaklo. Look on the street. Everywhere there is agbeli kaklo,” he said.

Agorhom argued that the widespread availability of the snack suggests that more people are turning to cheaper food options amid economic hardship.

“And that tells you, you and I know what agbeli kaklo represents economically in our situation. So it means that people are hungrier now, so they are going for agbeli kaklo,” he added.

However, the presenter challenged his argument, pointing out that agbeli kaklo is a popular snack and is not necessarily consumed only by people experiencing financial difficulties.

Agorhom maintained that he personally enjoys the snack but insisted that its increased availability on the streets should be considered in the broader context of the economy.
