Afia Pokua has apologised to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over some comments she made that were perceived as disrespectful.
In a statement shared on social media, the Agoo TV journalist expressed regret for her comments, acknowledging that they were out of order.
“I unreservedly and unconditionally apologize to His Royal Majesty the Asantehene and, by extension, the Asanteman Council for my distasteful remarks made on the ‘Biribi Gyegye Wo’ show aired on Saturday, 14th September 2024 on Onua TV,” parts of her comments on Facebook captured.
She also acknowledged that her comments were damaging to Otumfuo’s esteemed reputation, adding that she has learned a lot from the situation.
“Although I had no malicious intent, I am aware I did not communicate well on the subject. I take full responsibility for my actions and consider this a valuable learning experience,” she wrote.
Afia Pokua, who made the statements that prompted the backlash on Onua TV’s ‘Bribi Gye Gye Wo’ show, has also promised to use the same platform to issue a formal apology.
Background
The controversy began when Afia Pokua, a journalist at Agoo TV, criticised the Asantehene for his perceived silence amid ongoing conflicts involving his subjects and other tribes, including the Bonos.
On Onua FM’s ‘Bribi Gye Gye wo,’ hosted by Mona Gucci, Pokua expressed frustration with what she sees as Ashantis proving superiority over other tribes and the Asantehene’s refusal to act on it.
These statements have led to widespread outrage among the Ashantis, with Afia Schwarzenegger particularly vocal in her criticism.
