Ghanaian media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has lauded Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's approach to addressing the issue of illegal mining, known locally as "galamsey."
According to her, his solution is the most practical solution she has encountered.
Dr. Bawumia, during a stakeholder meeting, proposed a preventive strategy by sanitising the small-scale mining sector.
His solutions include empowering the Geological Survey Authority to map mineral reserves and creating a resource pool of equipment to support sustainable mining practices.
He also highlighted the use of mercury-free gold catcher machines to ensure environmentally responsible mining.
Reacting to this in a post on X on Friday, October 11, 2024, Nana Aba expressed her support for Dr Bawumia's proposals.
She stated that Dr. Bawumia's strategy showed a deep understanding of the intricacies of galamsey and offered realistic measures to combat it.
"I just listened to Dr Bawumia’s remarks on galamsey. Glad he’s finally commented on the menace. His solution is the most practical one I’ve heard so far. I hope he walks the talk if he gets the mandate," she posted.
Nana Aba called on all Ghanaians to support measures that protect the country's water bodies and forest reserves, stating that sustainable development is better than the short-term gains from illegal mining.
