Veteran Ghanaian actress Akofa Edjeani has voiced her concerns about the lack of respect given to the creative arts industry in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Edjeani pointed out the industry's critical role in preserving and promoting the national culture.

She urged leaders to recognise the broader impact of the creative sector beyond just entertainment.

“We are custodians of our culture. So leaders have to understand this and use us well. The services we give are not just entertainment. It's the information, the education, and the fact that we can be used to reorient the minds of people.

“That's a very critical thing we are not taking advantage of. We teach, we reorient, we set the path. And so this is an industry that priority has to be given to. Your culture is your foundation,” she said.

Akofa Edjeani, also a National Film Authority (NFA) board member, lamented the current state of cultural neglect, noting that the disregard for cultural values has led to widespread societal issues.

“Currently, the foundation is just not right. We've thrown away the culture, and so anything goes. Now we are seeing the brunt of it. The whole country is suffering,” she added.
