Ghanaian media personality Bridget Otoo has expressed shock at the Ghana Medical Association's (GMA) decision to abstain from the organised labour strike planned for October 10, 2024.

In a post on X on October 9, 2024, she stated that even religious bodies, which she described as institutions that "believe in miracles," are taking a stand on the galamsey issue, while the GMA, an institution grounded in science, chose not to participate.

"The institution that believes in miracles has taken over the institution that is supposed to use science in making decisions!" parts of her statements read.

The GMA announced on October 8 that it would not join the planned nationwide strike by organised labour.

Although the institution expressed solidarity with the fight against galamsey, representatives stated that they will continue providing health care to those in need.

But the GMA's decision has since sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some supporting the choice to prioritise their primary responsibilities, while others, like Bridget Otoo, accused the association of shirking a more active role in the protest.

"Ghana Medical Association of all the institutions. Even religious bodies have seen the lights when it comes to Galamsey!

“The institution that believes in miracles has taken over the institution that is supposed to use science in making decisions! #FreeTheCitizens #StopGalamseyNow," she wrote.

The October 10 strike was called amid growing demands from various labour groups, environmentalists, health practitioners, clergy, and concerned citizens.

It aims at prompting the government to implement stricter measures to address the galamsey crisis, which has led to an escalating environmental disaster.
