Jazz singer, Stephanie Benson has thrown her weight behind netizens in the #FreetheCitizen protest which started on September 25, 2024, on social media.
In a short video online, the "All About Love" hit-maker called on the government to free Ghanaians from oppression.
According to her, leaders in charge of affairs are greedy and do not have the nation at heart.
"Today I think it is important that I say how I feel about what is happening in Ghana right now. Free the citizen, let the law work, let there be some kind of mutual respect or value for human beings.
"We seem to have lost it, because of Greed, anger, hunger, and pain," she said.
Stephanie Benson is not the only Ghanaian celebrity who has joined in the fight against illegal mining (Galamsey).
Celebrities like Efia Odo, Kwaw Kese, Ayigbe Edem, Kwesi Arthur, and social media influencer Kaly Jay among many others are lead members pioneering the #FreetheCitizens.
b>Background
The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters were arrested during their demonstration, which took place in Accra.
The arrests followed a three-day protest at the 37 military Roundabout, where demonstrators raised concerns about illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement.
On Sunday, September 22, tensions escalated as a major confrontation occurred between protesters from Democracy Hub and the Ghana Police Service, marking the second day of the demonstrations.
The protestors have been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court. They face five charges: conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct, breach of public peace, and assault on public officers.
They pleaded not guilty to all charges and are set to reappear in court on October 8, 2024.
