Songstress Lady Jay has shared her thoughts on the debate of whether Ghana has a music industry or not.

She told okayafrica.com in an interview that Ghana do not have a music industry contrary to the popular belief.

“We don’t have an industry. Sweetheart, some of the things you are talking about, are not here. What keeps my music going are my fans, people that believe in me, God, my talent, my music, my spirit. This is what keeps my music afloat. Not even money.”

She adds: “My mind isn’t even here, I didn’t make my music just for Ghana, I made it for the world. That’s why I’m not upset that I’m not blowing up or anything because I know it’s a gradual process. And I am happy I am growing.

There is a niche market for the kind of music I’m creating with Kuvie and nobody is creating this kind of music. E.L. having the opportunity to be around when I started creating this music has been able to tap into this flow. He’s a very good friend of mine.”

Ever wondered why she sounds like musician Efya and vice versa? She explained in the interview.

“I went to school with Efya. I’ve known her since I was six. We lost touch but we are very close. I also owe most of my growth to Panji and Funsho [Ogundipe]. He is my Nigerian music father he’s the one I write real afrobeats with. He plays with me when I’m playing in Nigeria for Felebration. I played Felabration four years in a row. Femi Kuti calls me his daughter.”

Lady Jay is currently independent and managing herself because she “cannot be anybody’s toy. I cannot be anybody’s rag.”

A new video for her song ‘Oh My My My’ is in the works. She believes that her song ‘Venus’ which features Sarkodie will help her get that mainstream appreciation.
