EL is a Ghanaian rapper and producer
Ghanaian rapper and producer EL has stated that while Ghana’s music industry is not lacking talent, breaking onto global charts such as Billboard often requires significant financial backing.
Speaking in an interview shared on social media by Ameyaw Debrah, EL said the local industry is growing steadily but cannot benefit from moving at a faster pace, insisting that speed, rather than talent, is the only thing holding it back.
“I don’t think there’s anything lacking. I think it’s growing at its own pace. If for anything, we might want it to grow a bit faster, so the only thing lacking might be speed,” he said.

Reacting to the assertion that it takes about a million dollars to push songs onto global charts, EL agreed, saying, “If you have a million, you will definitely end up on the Billboard. Yeah, if you want it to.”
According to the award-winning musician, today’s music business has become more focused on image and marketing than talent alone.
“These days it’s become a lot more smoke and mirrors. It’s become a lot more about the showbiz aspects as opposed to what the talent is bringing to the table,” he explained.
Elsewhere in the interview, EL named “Bow Legge,” a song off his collaborative project Dancing Machine with D-Black, as his current favourite track.
He also hinted at a return of the Azonto sound, noting that while the genre never disappeared, he and D-Black are reviving it in a big way through the project.
Asked about the musicians he currently enjoys listening to, EL mentioned Michael Jackson and Sam Smith as two of his favourite artistes.
