Kumasi-based Gospel musician Jack Alolome says he will never sing for free in a church because as an artiste, he needs money to take care of his basic needs.
Speaking on Luv FM’s “Oseikrom Top Chart Show” with Austine Woode, the “God will make a way” hit maker said “music is all I do hence I can’t be playing free shows and beg others for money to take care of my family”.
Jack Alolome was responding to a question on why Gospel musicians who say they are doing the work of God have to charge money to minister in a church.
He said he has been invited to perform in churches and later realised the program had been sponsored but all what these churches give him is money for transport.
“How can I travel to Accra from Kumasi to perform in a church and after the show, you put a small amount in an envelope and expect me to be ok when I need to pay my utility bills?” he asked.
“I will open the envelope and if the amount is just for transport, I’ll confront the organisers of the programme that since the program is sponsored, they should add something to it”
Speaking on the same show, Rev. Duter Mensah of ICGC said Gospel musicians should not see their calling as a money making venture but a calling to do God’s work. He however added that “if music is the only thing they are involved in then they should be paid well to help them take care of their families”
He said he for instance does no job apart from working as a Pastor for ICGC so he is paid a salary at the end of the month.
