Ghana Jollof placed third in this years’ Washington D.C. Jollof Festival which was held on Saturday, 7 July 2018 at the Union Market in District of Columbia (D.C.).
Apart from Ghana, the other countries that took part in the competition are Senegal, The Gambia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Togo, Cameroon and Mali.
The dish was judged based on presentation, taste, and originality.
Liberian Jollof came first, followed by Sierra Leone’s.
Nigeria Jollof, which came first in the first edition of the Jollof festival in 2017, did not make it to the top three this year.
Over the years, there have been intense debate, especially on social media, about which country prepares the best Jollof Rice in West Africa.
The dish comprises rice, tomatoes and tomato paste; onions, salt, spices such as nutmeg, ginger, Scotch bonnet and chili pepper. Optional ingredients can be added such as vegetables, meat or fish. Due to the tomato paste, the dish is always orangish.
