Sloopy Mike Gyamfi (L) said Kuami Eguene (R) used his song 'Asem Kakra' without his consent
Highlife veteran Sloopy Mike Gyamfi, known in private life as Mike Kwadwo Gyamfi, has accused singer Kuami Eugene of using his music without first seeking his approval.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, the legendary musician laughed when asked whether any artiste had ever sampled one of his songs with permission.
During the conversation, he alleged that Kuami Eugene performed a version of his classic track “Asem Kakra” without informing him beforehand.
According to Gyamfi, the younger artiste’s performance can easily be found online, noting that a video of the rendition is available on YouTube.
He explained that the singer executed the song well, but never contacted him to discuss using the record.
Kuami Eugene speaks against the clash of song release dates in Ghana
“Kuami Eugene took my song. You can find it on YouTube. He did it very well. He sang the song so nicely. The song was Asem Kakra. If you Google the song with Kuami Eugene’s name, you will see it. He did a good job with the song, though. Kuami Eugene did not speak with me before using my song,” he said.
The veteran musician further clarified that Eugene essentially delivered a cover of ‘Asem Kakra,’ while adding some of his own lyrics to the original composition.
He stressed that he bears no resentment toward the young artiste, whom he regards almost like a son.
Gyamfi said if Kuami Eugene’s intention was simply to pay tribute or show admiration for his music, he would have no issue with it. However, he maintained that basic courtesy would have required the singer to approach him first.
“In the video, he was singing Asem Kakra. It is not like he used the song. He was singing my Asem Kakra song, but he added his own lyrics to it. It is also on YouTube. He is like my son, so if he admires what I did and wants to do something with my song, I have no problem with it. But he should have at least consulted me first before doing it,” he said.
He indicated that he has already forgiven Kuami Eugene and holds no ill feelings toward him. He also admitted that he is unsure whether the singer personally knows him.
The Highlife legend concluded by saying he would welcome the opportunity to meet Kuami Eugene in the future for a conversation.
