Let's cut our coat according to our size - Diana Hamilton on cathedral saga

Veteran Musician Diana Hamilton is urging government to carefully factor in opinions for and against the building of a National Cathedral before a final decision is made on the project.

She says even though she supports the initiative because it will serve a much-needed venue for many events, the nation needs to think through to find out if we can afford it at this time.

The building of a National Cathedral has generated a lot of controversies recently after it emerged, that the newly built residential complex for staff of the judicial service is to be pulled down for the construction of the cathedral.

Civil society and some prominent lawyers have criticized the cost of rebuilding another complex to house the judicial staff, and a reported $2200 per month accommodation to temporarily house each of them while the new complex is under construction.

The cost of the cathedral, estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of cedis has also been a subject of disagreement, with many asking why a nation with a struggling economy, will use the taxpayers' money to build a rather non-essential monument.

Government has argued the National Cathedral will not be taxpayer funded, but had failed to clearly spell out where exactly the money will be coming from.

Diana Hamilton believes the National Cathedral is worth it, if only Ghana at this particular time can afford it. The nation should assess its priorities before making the final decision on the cathedral.



According to her, besides being an iconic national monument, it will fill the void of a large indoor arena, which Ghana currently lacks for the organisation of major indoor events.
