Ghanaian comedian DKB has come to the defence of former President Mahama's proposal for 24-hour nightclubs as part of his '24-Hour Economy Policy.'
It could be recalled that during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto launch in Winneba, Mahama promised that the hospitality industry, including restaurants, discotheques, nightclubs, and hotels, would operate 24/7 if he is re-elected.
This proposal was met with mixed reactions from Ghanaians, with many questioning the feasibility of such a policy.
However, DKB, real name Derick Kobina Bonney, in a video shared on his X handle on September 5, 2024, pointed out that such a proposal is indeed possible.
He argued that 24-hour bars, lounges, and discos are common in cities like Las Vegas, Liverpool, and Montreal.
He questioned why such a proposal is perceived as unrealistic for Ghana when similar establishments thrive globally.
“There are 24-hour bars, lounges, and discos across the world. Las Vegas does not sleep. There are nightclubs in Las Vegas that run for 24 hours. Some in Liverpool run for 24 hours. Canada, Montreal, they have clubs that run 24 hours.
“So my question is, if those clubs are running 24 hours in other countries, how come all of a sudden when it comes to Ghana, it's not possible?” he said.
DKB also pointed out that the current government has a habit of comparing Ghana to other countries only when it comes to increasing taxes, such as the recent passport price hike.
He added that the idea is feasible and should not be dismissed.
“When they want to increase taxes, they use other countries as examples.
“Case in point, our passports. Before they increased the price, they were like, we are paying less for a passport than other countries. Before you know it, the passport prices are doubled.
“So if you can compare Ghana to the outside world when you want to increase taxes, then compare Ghana to the outside world when it comes to 24-hour hospitality.
“So JM proposing a 24-hour discotheque can be true. It's not wrong. It's already happening,” he stated.
See the video below:
H.E John Mahama's 24 hour discotheque is not a fallacy, it's very true, it's already happening in Las Vegas, Liverpool, Montreal Canada etc.
When the government wants to increase prices they compare whatu we pay in Ghana to other countries, so why not 24hour bar/disco?
