Two students arrested for attempting to sell colleagues

Bibiani (W/R), June 5, GNA - The Police in Bibiani have arrested two final-year students of Mpasatia Secondary/Technical School in the Atwima-Mponua district of Ashanti for allegedly offering three of their colleagues for sale at 100 million cedis.

The suspects, 19-year-old Godwin Biri Asamoah, and Dolman Nti Junior, 22, were arrested at a hotel in Bibiani on Sunday night after collecting a cash of three million cedis and a cheque for 97 million cedis from a prospective buyer of their victims.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Bibiani on Monday, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Felix Toya, Bibiani District Police Commander, said an informant from Sefwi-Bekwai informed the police that, a friend of his who is a student of Mpasatia Secondary/Technical school, had called him on the phone that, he had three persons to be sold and that, he should find somebody who will buy them.

He said the police arranged for a prospective "buyer" and gave his telephone number to the informant to be given to the suspects. ASP Toya said the police booked a hotel at Bibiani to host the suspects and the victims for the transactions.

He said on Sunday, June 4, this year, at about 1750 hours, the suspects called up the "buyer" that they had arrived at Bibiani and requested for a private car to convey them to the hotel. ASP Toya said at the hotel, the "buyer" and the suspects entered a room while the victims were left waiting in the car outside. He said after negotiations, the "buyer" gave a cash of three million cedis and a cheque of 97 million cedis issued in the name of one Anthony Twum-Barima to be cashed at the Sefwi-Wiawso branch of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).

The Police Commander said the suspects put the money and the cheque into a handbag and when they came out of the hotel, the police who had then laid ambush arrested them.

ASP Toya said the alleged victims, Seth Osei, Osei Tutu and Bright Darko all final year students of the school, had since been released to the authorities of the school. He said the suspects would soon be put before court. 05 June 06
