Ghanaian media personality Ola Michael has expressed disappointment over recent comments made by Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh regarding a rise in HIV infections on the University of Ghana (UG) campus.

Earlier in an interview, the Founder and President of World Miracle Outreach attributed the spread of the virus to high levels of promiscuity among students, claiming that many at the university are HIV-positive.

Commenting on Lawrence Tetteh’s statement on Neat FM on October 28, 2024, Ola Michael emphasised the need for proper data and scientific evidence before making such claims.

He questioned whether the pastor’s assertions were based on hearsay rather than factual evidence.

“I felt disappointed when he said that. Why would a man of God, without any data, claim that there's a rise in HIV infections on the UG campus? Before making such claims, there should be data that states that they have tested the hypothesis and these are the findings. So, by projection, we think that about 10% of the students on UG campus may have contracted HIV.’

“But you are not a scientist, and you don’t work with the AIDS commission. How did you know? Or was it based on hearsay?” Ola Michael questioned.

Meanwhile, in response to Lawrence Tetteh’s statement, the University of Ghana issued a statement on October 25, 2024, describing his claims as unfounded and insensitive.

The university explained that HIV status can only be determined through scientific methods, not through prayer or counseling, and advised that public discussions should be based on verified facts to avoid spreading fear, stigma, and misinformation.
