  Some couples find that the best way to communicate effectively is to go somewhere quiet, go for a walk. Others find that the best time to discuss issues is after a meal or at bedtime when they are alone. The worst time to discuss issues is just before a spouse leaves for work or has something urgent to do. It is important to be relaxed. Please don't engage in serious discussions after a few alcoholic drinks because it is likely booze will be the one doing the talking and shouting! RESPECT IS CRITICAL.
  The statement "We need to talk" is actually a very good one. What counts is how it is said. Saying this in a sullen or angry manner does not help. Also saying "I want to talk to you about something" may come across as unduly aggressive and put off the other party be it man or woman. Again everything depends on how a couple habitually talk or communicate with each other.
  I agree that sometimes a husband or wife has to set the stage before talking about talking. A woman who tells a husband who has just returned from a busy job exhausted that she was too busy to get some food(if she is at home and not working herself) and that he has to make do with a slice of bread and butter for supper can hardly expect to get her husband's undivided attention during any attempt to communicate. Likewise a husband who constantly puts down his wife at home and constantly humiliates her should not expect on-demand sex when his lordship feels like it. I'm just saying.
  IN MARRIAGES THAT ARE GROWING EACH PARTNER LEARNS OVER TIME TO HEAR WHAT THE OTHER IS REALLY SAYING.THEY LEARN TO HEAR WHAT THEIR SPOUSE IS SAYING BEYOND MERE WORDS.COMMUNICATION IS MORE THAN MERE WORDS.
