Sometimes we all talk too much and criticize without analyzing issues . Now let’s analyse what happened.

A press inference was organised by this chef. The media men invited surely weren’t aware of what he was going to announce. He announced himself the new record holder and brought out his citation. Before the press conference ends, there’s disturbance by a group of people and the Police whisk the chef away.

A day after , a journalist with GH ONE tv actually gets a response from the awarding entity(GWR) that the chef’s claim of being the record holder (announced within the last 24 hours) is false and makes this known to all. Now tell me, as a reasonable and rational person; at what point do you expect the media to have had the right information and disseminate same ? The media isn’t a walking encyclopedia. Their job is to report . And then do their fact check and report that along side . It didn’t take more than a day for the media to announce this false claim by the chef . So why bashing the media?

Oh I get it , you expected the media to have known he was lying instantly? Some say a simple google search would have revealed it . Well, you need to know how google works. And any serious reporter wouldn’t rely on a simple google search for fact checking. The right thing was done; contacting the awarding entity and waiting for the response. This can take hours. Let’s stop this attitude of always trying to criticize when we haven’t analyzed issues fully

You have a really good point when you say the media should have checked if he had indeed applied first. And not waited till the “results” were released. But there’s an important factor to consider here. At the time. There were “a million” Ghanaians who announced they were embarking on so many marathons.

There was a guy embarking on a kissing marathon, another went in for the record of applying lipsticks on the most number of women within a minute . Then there was a man who attempted to stand still for days while there was another grilling Khebabs for days around the same time . Indeed when a man was walking from Sunyani to Accra ; a mature woman was sitting behind her computer , attempting to chew gum continuously for at least a day.

So many of them within a space of two months. Chef smith was one of them. Can you really tell me that people weren’t fed up with these challenges? Many people were of the view that these challenges were not even important anyway. Holding the record for chewing gum had no real benefits to Ghana , many thought. In light of that, people advocated that we re prioritize our time and energies to dealing with the many ills in our society and leave these “funny challenges” to the “non serious” people.

You really expected the media to have contacted the awarding entity ( GWR) to verify all of these applications? Really? Each day , there were people embarking on a new challenge . The media should have devoted time and resources to verifying all of them? To what end? And for what benefit?

I think it was absolutely fine for the media not to have done that at the time, but rather seek verification after someone claimed to have won a challenge .

Finally, it’s good to have an intellectual discourse on topics. Everyone learns something in the end. And that’s why it is important to be decorous in our debates. There’s no need to insult one another .

I don't think apology is enough.The law must take it's course cos this is something he wilfully planned and executed. There is criminal intension here and this must serve as a lesson to others who're planning to do same
