  The statement from the clergyman is true to some extent but arguable. If both individuals are matured to an extent, then they will be able to coexist and navigate through life's journey and turbulence to get to the expected end and beyond. But where you have one party easily influenced by the outside world (friends and society) then in the absence of financial stability, there may be challenges. So it's a sound advice but must be expatiated to include what I stated above. My take

  It is an advise either you take or leave it. I married very early at age 23 and never regret , when you are in competition with others marriage becomes expensive but when you mine you own life then you are good to go.

This mentality is crashing marriages.no disrespect, I don't think even your father was that rich when he married.money does not create love but bring about dependency. .so wait wait and see when u lose everything.most of the successful marriages u see today started from the scratch . But the only drive is sense of purpose.

Stop borrowing money to marry when you don't know the future.

  many young people in Ghana marry as aresult of peer pressure.They equate getting married to success so they are forced to expensive wedding making them start their lives off with debt of no money.Instead of investing their capitals to secure themselves in the future,they put these monies into expensive weddings.These behaviors are fueled by the churches because these events bring crowd and more money into the church.Church members will soon increase because these couples will bring forth and increase the churches' numbers.Eventually most of these marriages will become sour as the expectations and realities may be diiferent.Adultry wil start setting in as some of the women will start looking elsewhere for finanacial support

  A lot depends on the woman when it comes to marriage expenditure. I borrowed 10,000GHc to marry in 2019. This amount didn't cover all the dowry items. Some were purchased by my wife.

  A lot depends on the woman when it comes to marriage expenditure. I borrowed 10,000GHc to marry in 2019. This amount didn't cover all the dowry items. Some were purchased by my wife. 
  
  
  Some of the 10,000 took care of venue preparation and decoration. Some people thought the licensed venue wasn't befitting of our status but we ignored them and maintained that if it was good for worshipping God there, then it was good for our ceremony. 
  
  
  Some of the money went into photography and fuel for the bridal vehicle. We decided to spend as little as possible on refreshment. No gift items, no fried anything with chicken. It's not good for people's health. We did small chops, minerals and bottled water. By the way, is Malta Guinness considered as minerals?
  
  
  Anyway, we controlled invitations by printing 50 cards. Some people at our workplaces were not happy but we won't be bothered. It was our wedding, not theirs. Yen krokro obiaa. Anytime I proposed something that would cost us money, my wife would tell me that if I have money and don't know what to use it for, I should let her have it.
  
  
  When the wedding was over, we had saved 2,000GHc out of the 10,000.
  
  
  The following day, we were in church for thanksgiving. After that, everyone forgot about us. The following weekend there were weddings in our individual churches that overshadowed ours. Nobody even remembered ours. 
  
  
  Let me also say that my wife's church has a policy of donating offering on wedding days to the couple. Yes, nothing goes to God. He understands that His children are getting married and need the money. 
  
  
  To each, their own. I'm not saying what worked for me would work for others. If you have money to blow, why not. Feel free and blow it, but from my experience, there's truth in what the good Pastor is saying and only the wise would appreciate it.
  
  
  The big problem however, is finding the woman who would start small with you. A woman who would not permit you to spend over 10,000GHc on renting a venue, over 2,000GHc on a ring or wedding dress. If I had gotten such a woman in my twenties or thirties, I would have married long ago.
