It is all about our choices. I have learned over many years that people who repeatedly make terrible choices do so because sometimes they are headstrong and very opinionated. In other words they are always right and everybody else is wrong).They never listen to any advice and it never seems to occur to them that they could be sincerely wrong in their decision making and choices. Sometimes they know what is right but really don't care anymore because of a variety of reasons. For those kinds of personalities often the only way they can ever learn and hopefully correct their behavior is through making very painful mistakes. Unfortunately not all mistakes are easy to recover from. Refusing to climb a HILL of difficulty in our path today may mean that next time we may have to climb a MOUNTAIN of difficulty to get to the other side. Difficult but right choices are like that. It is always best to deal with todays issues by doing the right thing now even if this causes as great discomfort and even if it means displeasing others by doing the right thing.
