Switching from English to twi (or another local language) will do us no educational or social good. Neither will it bring economic development. The world has passed this kind of frivolity. Language supremacy shouldn't be a national discussion at this point. The world has become a global village and we should be thinking about languages which connect us to the rest of the world for economic prosperity. If you still don't agree, mention just one economic importance of making two our national language when not even everyone can speak it.

It is not the official language. Nobody is advocating that Twi be adopted as Official language. It is not likely to be Official language because it is not well developed, but it is definitely now the only national language.
Most countries have a National language and an Official language. In some countries the national language is also the Official language.
The sensitivity about accepting the fact that Twi is our national language is because it is associated with a particular tribe, Asante.
A tribe and a language are two separate things, though they made be associated.
People would accept the fact of Twi being a national language if they separate the language from the the tribe. Twi does not belong to Asantes.
Twi-----as a language, it is a "weak" one. Thus it easily adopts words from other languages.
There are various versions of it throughout the country. You do not need to speak Asante Twi. SPEAK YOUR OWN TWI.....it's called free styled twi. That's the national language.

I literally grew up in Manchester,UK and of Ga extraction.I come across a hell of a lot of people living in the UK but,speaks only Twi. On a trip to my beloved Accra,I came across a lady .She was Twi speaking and had lived in Manchester for quite some time.At the airport,she was screwed because she only spoke Twi and,found navigating through Manchester and Schipol Airports a problem because of a lack of the ability to learn or to speak English.She needed to tag on to someone travelling to Accra and ,a Ghanaian.If she had the ability to speak and,to understand English,she would not need some one to tag on to.
The issue of possibly Twi being a national language is a fallacy.Most people in the world speaks English.Why would it be necessary to extricate yourself the rest of the world?

Ghana is underdeveloped and our rate of development is even declining. Replacing English with Twi as a national language ? Because of what? Because you are proud of your heritage? Please spare us. You do what’s needed before attempting what’s desirable . If decades ago, Ghana and our leaders had worked hard to make us developed like Singapore, we could have now decided to make any local language a national one. This is just not the time for that; we have proven that we need the world for our survival and we can’t limit ourselves .

Maybe you guys don’t understand what a national language is . It means the nations official language . It means if president of Ghana travels to Nigeria, he will communicate officially in Twi with the Nigerian President and have it translated . Second, two, Asante, Akyems, Kwahus, and Denkyira, who had travelled to Ghana and moved to other places due to ancient wars, went to these places using their own language. Most people from other regions have moved to areas like Ashanti and Bono regions and Accra to engage in other economic activities and adopt those area areas as their homes. It will be a shocker if real head count of Ghanaians in ethnic lines is undertaken in this country. Also, nobody should ever think that one tribe mother tongue can be imposed on any one. If even the head of state is from that tribe. We the north will not allow any tribe to impose anything on us because we are the original indigenous people of Ghana. We will allow you to do all the talking but we know who we are. My family I know living in Accra don’t watch twi radio or television station but many of them understand a bit of twi. Asante Twi is figmemt of the imagination and tautology coined by so called language professors from the middle 1980's during the educational reforms before then there wae nothing like Asante Twi Bible only Twi Bible etc. Akan kasa was spoken on GBC radio One by Akwasi Donkor - renowned broadcastor. Fante language, Bono , Wassa etc when spoken are all understood in Twi. Outside in Ghana the language is Twi general not Asante Twi. Avoid being specific, you can speak your Asante but not Asante Twi a big hoax and tautology to own a whole language for yourself. Mr Quaye was right on point when he mentioned Twi for the generic. Only time will tell if the proposal can gain traction. Come to the North and compel us or suggest twi as an official language to us. I thought you had sense. Every ethnic group has a duty to prioritize it's language. Is this our priority? No one has even ever prayed in any other language before. From the first to the last person, everyone can speak Twi, yet not all can speak fluent English.

When the argument is reduced to the a cross boarder transaction, then we need ask people in China, Korea, France, the Netherlands and all the countries in Europe including Russia how they transact businesses. It's only in Africa, Africa, Africa, that we are made to believe that our language can't be used for anything. We need to breakaway from this deep rooted brainwash. Even Xi can interact with Trump.
