Akan is a Trading Language. That is why it is widely spoken. Akan is spoken more in Greater Accra region and at Makola than Ga. You can go there and verify. Yes, this is because Akans trade more than Ga people. When I did my National Service at Tamale, people spoke more Akan than Dagbani at the Market.

It doesn't make it superior, it only means people move to Accra for economic means but still insist on speaking their native tongues only. However. The same people will rush to learn a new language by any means if they move to another country's. Our forefathers saw the insight of English being the national language as to avoid issues like these (multi ethnicity)one tribal group is trying to undo the basis of this decision.

The great great English, French and Portuguese-speaking grandchildren of those of you who are tickling your balls in anticipation that one of our local languages can at the snap of a finger, be elevated to global status, will be sorely disappointed.

The evolution of a language from a raw local primitive and backward state to one that will cover all facets of modern life is a tall order that will take a minimum of not less than 200 years to come to fruition - if by then our local languages have not been confined to museums.

In Ghana right from nursery believe all Ghanaians should speak and be educated in 2 of our languages Twi and another language. Twi not because it is superior to ewe ga dagbani or any other but because it is the most widely spoken. Akwaaba is globally accepted in reference to Ghana as a country. I don't think there is a problem in adding oobake which mean welcome in Ga to the other forms of welcome. However instead of replacing we shd be adding.T kotoka we have Akwaaba. As something that is synonymous to Ghana replacing it with Oobake would be a negative, however adding it would be a positive. A banner that reads welcome akwaaba oobake Woezor etc will only enhance our cultural diversity

They have fought each other many times. The Fante fought bloody wars against the Ashanti. The Dormaahene himself openly challenged the Asantehene’s authority and they clashed in public. That doesn’t look like one united block ready to fight for Ashanti.
And don’t forget history: Ga-Dangme and our allies defeated the Ashanti army at Katamanso (Dodowa) in 1826. The “mighty” Ashanti were beaten on Ga land.
So stop the insults. Before you call Ga people “foolish,” remember your own Akan side is divided and Ga have already proven themselves in battle against Ashanti.

But to deny the allegation confirms the disrespect that have been given the language which Ga people always complained about.

The GTA should have responded with a better explanation and for that matter assure the Ga people the flexibility of the GTA incorporating the Ga greeting, ‘OOBAKE” in the billboards.
