  Anyone who is growing and maturing as a person will most likely end up replacing the friends they had when they were in their teens, in their twenties or even thirties.
  We all change, and in many ways, this is not a bad thing. This means that sometimes we can't always take old friends along with us to where we are going in life.
  If at the age of 40 years or older we are still laughing at those silly jokes cracked while in our twenties then perhaps we are not growing or maturing as individuals. The frivolous activities that took up so much of our time while we were in our twenties no longer matter to us by the time we reach our forties if our personality is developing and maturing. There will always be friends and even relatives who will misunderstand you and become resentful because you no longer devote copious amounts or time and effort meeting their demands and wants which they felt entitled to in the past. They may even accuse you of rejecting them, neglecting them or accuse you of becoming snobbish or becoming “uppity”. This is especially likely to happen after you marry and then have different priorities (a spouse and children) and may even be living in a different geographical location
  THE TRUTH IS THAT WHEN MANY OF US REACH OUR FORTIES, FIFTIES AND OLDER WE GENERALLY TEND TO HAVE FEWER FRIENDS ON WHOM WE CAN RELY. QUALITY RATHER THAN QUANTITY BECOMES FAR MORE IMPORTANT IN RELATIONSHIPS AND FRIENDSHIPS. IN THIS CASE THE COMMON BOND IS OFTEN SHARED INTERESTS, VALUES OR BELIEFS AND A CERTAIN DEGREE OF CO-DEPENDENCY.
  Also, as individuals age, we often cultivate a broader range of close friendships with people from diverse backgrounds, including differences in ethnicity, race, or age. This is always a good thing.
